Synopsis

The rise in popularity of Hollywood’s black movies in recent years was said to hit back at the current US President Donald Trump for his racist remarks and discriminatory attitude which were ill-suited to the image of a global leader. Yet, how should we interpret the socio-political nuances embedded in the various black movies produced by Hollywood? What are the messages implied in these movies as they seek to respond to the issue of racial discrimination in the US after the Second World War? This article takes reference from the main ideas raised in Frantz Fanon’s seminal book The Wretched of the Earth (1961) and examines three popular Hollywood black movies, namely Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), Black Panther (2018), and Green Book (2018). The aim is to explore how issues on race and violence are being depicted in these “mainstream” Hollywood movies which set out to affirm “non-violence as virtue” as a progressive ideal rooted in the West. Nonetheless, the advocacy of “non-violence” deflected further discussion on race and violence; it also failed to address the popularity of black movies among audience from the Third World.
